The entire Elementals series is one of those ah-hah moments that happen to me sometimes (not as often as I like but that’s another story). The series likely came in part from all of the fantasy books I read when I was younger as well as the paranormal series I was reading at the time. Then it morphed over time to become what it is today. It started ten years ago when I had this idea about four immortal (but not invulnerable) beings charged with periodically trying to save the world – and the punishment to mankind if they fail.
The first draft of what finally became Fire Danger stalled when I wrote myself into a corner trying to create this elaborate political shell game out of the plot. Finally I realized that romance is at the core of the series and I simplified that piece of the overall arc. The books in the series, flowed from that realization. I didn’t need to be too fancy, I just needed to write a romance that would make me cry, and then smile. Which I did, and hopefully my readers do too.
Through the process of writing and refining this series (a ten-year process, on and off) I discovered that there are elements of fantasy in this modern day paranormal romance. That’s the fun part for me. I’d love to think that there are elements of the unseen all around us and so I add that to my writing. If I could live in a world of magical realism I’d probably love it. In these books I get to realize that fantasy.
At the end of this process there will be five Elementals books. The first four feature one each of the Elementals and their own road to their happily ever after and the fifth…well we have to get there first. I hope my readers take that road with me and enjoy the journey as first Phoenix (Fire Danger), then Griffin (Air Attack), then Ondine (Water Fall), and finally the duo, Shani and Masud, who find their own HEA.
What do you love the best paranormal or fantasy romance?
