The premise of the story is this…
Former Comanchero Mingo Valderas is trying to leave his outlaw past behind when pampered heiress Elizabeth Bradford White steals his heart. Together, they risk everything, even their lives, to surmount the deadly interference of a dangerous rival who will do anything to keep Elizabeth for himself, including murder and kidnapping.
Excerpt 3: Mingo tells Elizabeth (aka Isabel) about his family and how they became part of the Comanchero ‘culture’.
“My family has always been poor.” Mingo drew patterns in the sand with a stick as he talked. “It was over a hundred years ago in Mexico. My father’s family wanted more for their children than the terrible poverty and the hard life they lived. When they heard of the nomadic traders on the northern prairies, they made the long trek to Santa Fé and joined them. In the early days, these merchants were forbidden to do their trading near towns, so they took their trade to the Comanche out on the eastern prairie of the New Mexico Territory in their carretas.
“This is how they came to be called Comancheros. Then, over time, they became plains travelers when they learned to use horses for convenience and mobility. Until the past few years, most of the men in my family have known no other way.”
The first picture is a carreta at the Coronado Historic Site in Bernalillo, New Mexico (which is coincidentally a location mentioned in the story).
