Some of Ewan’s inner thoughts, from Chapter Six of Stricken. He’s considering something his grandfather said, and what to do about his friendship with Marti:
Am I willing to gamble away our friendship to see if there’s still a chance for us to be together?
Yes, I am, dammit.
I’m in love with her. I need her. I don’t want to be without her by my side. Eight years is too damn long.
Grandfather’s right, I shouldn’t have let her go at all.
Setting up the foundation for ideal man for this story wasn’t hard to do. I had a general idea of what I wanted him to look like – First Nations with brown eyes and black hair – and an idea of what his personality would be like, but I never thought he would evolve so quickly into the complex, loving, and sweet guy you see in the final product.
As one of my old school chums said, “He’s a nice guy”.
That’s exactly what I wanted people to think when they read Ewan and Marti’s journey – Ewan is a great guy, and they will want to know why Marti dumped him without any explanation.

First male out of three generations to take something other than geology or business in post-secondary education, first to leave the family business and the first to move out of Alberta in five generations. (The Campbell part of the family landed and settled in Nova Scotia, around the New Ross area, but since Bridgewater is the largest town in the county, he decides to move there and see if he can be successful without being known as Viktor Campbell’s grandson) Part of the popular and elite crowd in high school and university, and was very active in sports, notably hockey. Lived with a girl for a year during university but soon found out she was only after the family fortune, he ended it with her right after he found out.
Personality: Gentle, quiet, soft spoken, polite and a gentleman. Bit of a rebel. Tends to be guarded around strangers, and distant around those he doesn’t like. He can be icy cold and calculating around those trying to do him or his loved ones injustice. Hot tempered by times and will lash out before thinking things over rationally, especially in things related to lead female. Raised to be aloof but polite in public, but is openly affectionate and loving behind closed doors. Becomes more open with affection as time goes on but not in the company of his grandparents or uncles, only around his parents and lead female and her family. Tends to get angry if his protective side comes out or is worried about someone. Ultra-protective of those he loves and more so of women, especially the lead female. Has a silly side and teases lead female.
Loves the ocean, photography, hockey, cars (especially older ones), and the challenge of being successful in a dying province. Despises liars, sneaks, mushrooms, those who play dirty, and the narrow-minded Campbell mentality of the oldest generation.
At work, wears mostly sports jackets with a shirt and nice pants, occasionally a suit with tie. At home, wears mostly jeans and a tee shirt, polo shirt or regular shirt.
Left handed. Has astigmatism, so he wears corrective lenses, mostly contacts, sometimes regular glasses.
Thinks his type is sophisticated, bolder and less modest women his own age, but finds out he prefers quieter, modest and sweeter women like the lead female instead.
Wears a gold ID bracelet with his Blackfoot name of Keme (Thunder) written in Blackfoot script on his right wrist. Gift from his parents upon his high school graduation.
