- Halloween can be traced back to the Celtic celebration called Samhain, which means Summers End. This was celebrated in pre-Christian Ireland, the UK, and northern France at the end of the harvest on November 1st. It was believed that the dead could cross over during this time. Fires were lit and costumes were worn to ward off evil spirits.
- Trick-or-treating has existed since Medieval times, but it was called “guising” back then. The poor would wear costumes and go around asking for food or money in exchange for songs, dances, and prayer.
- An ancient tradition on Halloween was finding a husband. According to history.com, women would throw apple peels over their shoulder to see the initials of their future husband, bob for apples–the first one to catch one, would be married first, and stand with a candle in front of a mirror to see their future husband’s face.
- When the Irish fled their country due to the potato famine, they brought their Halloween traditions to the United States.
- Jack-o’-lanterns used to be carved out of turnips, potatoes, and beets.
- The top Halloween candy is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, according to a survey by Candy Store
- The night before Halloween is called “Mischief Night” and “Goosey Night” mostly on the East Coast and the Midwest. It’s a popular night for pranks like toilet papering and egging houses.
Happy Halloween!
