A little of the background of my new romance mystery Flotsam & Jetsam. It is set on Amelia Island, Florida.
Amelia Island, the southernmost of the Sea Islands on the Atlantic coast, has a very colorful history, having been ruled by several entities, including Spain and France, as well as a pirate and a mercenary. It is known as the Isle of Eight Flags.
Amelia Island was also once the shrimping capital of the US, founded by Sicilians, and manned by Geechee (Gullah)—descendants of freed black slaves.
The main town, Fernandina Beach, contains several historical buildings, a marina, and Fort Clinch, built in 1847 by the US. The fort sits on the northern corner of the island, protecting the entrance to the Amelia River. South of it is Egan’s Creek, a marshy area. This shore is where Simon and Ellie, State Park rangers, discover the bodies. And thus begins a winding road, littered with red herrings and straw men, to the truth.
