Post from The Crime of the Century-murder in a small town
CHAPTER 15: Defense Witnesses
Sarah Johnston was called to the stand. She spoke just above a whisper. She claimed she alone drove the Buick Skylark the entire day of October 4. She picked up Michelle for her allergy shot, bought a newspaper at Super Thrift grocery store, and then drove home with Michelle.
Once home, she saw Dale at their property talking with several men. She then fixed dinner and left at 5:30 p.m. leaving Michelle with Dale. She returned to Dr. Mason’s office and worked until 9:30 p.m. She admitted Annette owned three pairs of brown suede shoes, but adamantly claimed the shoes confiscated during the past summer belonged to her, not Annette.
She claimed the living room carpet inside the trailer was replaced with new “because it was worn.” The stove plate under the heating stove was changed to a larger size so “the kitchen tile would not be burned.”
She said after Dale was arrested, she was threatened with arrest numerous times by officers, in an attempt to “turn her against” her husband.
When asked on cross-exam why Annette “moved out of the trailer with most of her belongings,” Sarah claimed not to know why.
When asked if she knew “Dale and Annette were having sex,” she refused to answer, citing “marital confidentiality.”
