Arnhem Knight Theo walks in the door. The buffet is fragrant with a second course of everything. The blood fountain is flowing, but the tall blond’s eyes are on the crowd dancing. He is one of the ancient ones that has sworn an oath to King Max.
“Great to see you, Theo.” I love this vampire with his good looks and old fashioned charm. I suspect the man hides a lot of passion.
“I came over as soon as I got back in town. It’s quite the party. I see David here. But where’s the king?”
“He’s being fashionably late.” I laugh.
“Well, I’m later than expected. Another mission outside of state, but that is the life an of Arnhem Knight.”
“Meet anyone fascinating?”
“Susan, you must be a mind reader. Why don’t I share the excerpt I’ve brought with me. It’s from Vampire in the Basement.”
Theo went to where Lorraine lay in a ball facing the wall and shivering on the stone floor. Carefully he reclined as close to her as he dared.
“What are you doing?” She turned to face him.
“If you let me hold you, I can keep you warm.”
She looked over at Regina, but her sister-in-law was talking to David. Lorraine bit her lower lip.
“Why do you want to keep me warm, Theo?”
“I care about you, Lorraine.”
She chuckled, uncertain about believing him. “What is Theo short for anyway?”
“Wow. That’s some kind of name.”
“I was a senator of Rome. My name was actually Theodosious Claudius Aurelius Cassius.”
“Even more of a name. I’m Lorraine Cynthia Vasiliev. That’s it. Nothing fancy.”
“I like it very much. Your parents did well in naming you so beautifully.”
Lorraine blushed. Then she shivered.
“May I?” He held open his arms, and she scooted in against him.
“No biting and clothes stay on.”
“I got it. No biting and my clothes will remain on.”
Lorraine laughed. “I imagine a vampire’s had a lot of women.”
He gazed straight into her eyes. “I’m not going to lie to you. I’ve been with women to satisfy certain needs, but I feel something different for you.”
He played with a dark curl near her ear. “I was married once. Her name was Versia. We had a little boy named Claudius and a small daughter barely walking named Phila. They were the joy of my life, and the Emperor Nero had them killed.”
“I was attending the emperor as he was passing judgment on some unfortunates. Then he declared an orgy.”
“So Nero was a spontaneous kind of guy.”
“You could say that. He gave me a slave girl to enjoy and I declined. My wife more than fulfilled my needs and I waited for the emperor to dismiss me, so I could return to my family. He insisted I stay and drink the night away with him.” His expression was so grim, Lorraine shivered. “When I returned home that morning, I found my wife and children dead. All the servants were slaughtered too.”
“He did it, didn’t he?”
He nodded. A tear of blood made its way down his cheek. “He had ordered it done for my disobedience, I learned later.”
“What did you do?”
“I walked out of my house and out of Rome, heading north. I didn’t stop until one night when I met a vampire.”
She sighed, gazing up into his dark eyes. “We both haven’t done very well with love. You, having love and losing it. Me, giving love to the wrong guy.”
“I believe,” he caressed her cheek, “that’s all about to change.”
She smiled and shook her head. “I don’t know about that. I’m not so eager to make more mistakes.”
“Maybe this time it won’t be a mistake.”
She moved back from him. That was a mistake. The air in the cave was brutally cold. He enclosed her in his arms, and she rested her head on his chest.
“Are vampires always this warm?”
“Only with their lifemates,” he whispered in her ear.
Lorraine didn’t look up at him. She closed her eyes. Now that was a nice dream–to be Theo’s lifemate. Though she doubted it could work out.
