Moonlight Mile by B.J. McCall Excerpt One
Today, I’m posting more excerpts from my latest release, Moonlight Mile.
Driverless vehicles are the inspiration for this story.
BJ
In a future where robotic vehicles control the roadways, the once common skill of driving is a thing of history. As a result the popularity of retro street racing — vintage cars running on fossil fuels with humans at the wheel — is the new rage. Street racing is loud, gritty, dangerous and real. The fans crave it.
Sugar Evans loves to drive fast cars with powerful engines. It’s her legacy. She’s determined to win the race her father lost fifteen years ago in the Moonlight mile, the final and decisive mile of one of the toughest nighttime races on the circuit. To win, she has to beat top contender Callan MacQuaid.
On the eve of the big race, Mac finally meets challenger Sugar Evans. She’s beautiful and sexy hot, both on and off the course, but tonight Mac doesn’t want to compete.
EXCERPT
Mac liked everything about Sugar, her honey brown eyes, her sun-streaked hair, her toned body and long legs, even her name. Sexy, determined and a natural behind the wheel, Sugar was capable of snatching the win right out of his hands. But the race was tomorrow and tonight Mac wasn’t in the mood to compete. He liked talking to her. She knew racing and understood why he climbed behind the wheel. He’d never dated a woman who got it. Mac had followed Sugar’s career. He knew her racing stats, but not much about the woman behind the helmet. He’d wanted to meet her face-to-face for some time and when he found out she frequented Hot Wheels while in town, Mac had decided to make it happen.
Just looking at Sugar did something to him.
Mac paused in front of the Shed bearing his racing number and ran his hand along Sugar’s bare arm, then around her waist. He loved the feel of her soft skin and the promise of her enticing curves.
“We’re not walking, MacQuaid.”
He turned her toward him and wrapped his arms around her. “I had something else in mind.” He slanted his head, then touched his lips to hers.
Her lips clung to his and Mac tightened his hold. She smelled good, like flowers. She broke contact. “Not a good idea.” He pulled her close, so close her breasts pressed against his chest. “Let’s be bad.” “Adversaries don’t make good lovers.”
“Thinking about you naked would definitely affect my concentration, but I can deal with it.”
Sugar gave him a quick kiss and stepped out of his arms. “See you tomorrow, MacQuaid. On the starting line.”
She walked away, the skirt of her red dress swaying seductively in the lamplight.
Mac caught up with her and walked beside her. “I like you, Sugar. Win or lose, I want to see you again.”
She stopped walking and turned toward him. “I like you, MacQuaid. But the season is far from over.”
He knew she was calling him by his last name to maintain an emotional and physical distance. If she wasn’t attracted to him she wouldn’t bother to put up defenses. “Enough to call me Mac?”
“Okay, Mac. We’ll talk at the end of the season.”
