EXCERPT
Ian took Rissa’s arm and steered her toward the cash register. Once outside, he curled his arm over her shoulders. “We need to stick with our plan to make Madelaine think we’re madly in love.”
As Ian’s teeth nipped at Rissa’s earlobe and pleasure shivered down her spine, she could believe just that, especially since they were standing in front of a large plate-glass window stenciled with the word “silversmith.” A bed of black velvet cushioned its treasure of silver filigree designs accented with stones of onyx and turquoise and amber cat’s eye. One setting cradled a smoky agate swirled with shades of gray ranging from dark charcoal to the pale slate.
“Like your eyes.” Ian murmured as he tugged Rissa inside the shop.
The silversmith agreed the ring was made for her. “It fits perfectly. It was only waiting for you to discover its beauty.”
From under her lashes, Rissa glanced at Ian. He quirked a smile at her, causing an odd catch in her breast. When she slipped the ring off her finger and handed it back to the silversmith, her hand felt strangely empty without the curved ornament.
To regain her composure, she stared out the window–and noticed purple feathers poised just outside. “Aunt Maddie.”
“Save this ring for us.” They hustled out of the shop and stood once more looking in both directions. Instead of feathers, they spotted the jerky movements of a man bumping into pedestrians as he stumbled along the sidewalk.
“Beatrice’s nephew,” Rissa whispered.
They dodged into a nearby doorway, feigning intense interest in the window display until the man careened by. “Time’s running out.”
