Excerpt Chapter 4
Once Malik and Camdyn got settled, Malik called Sierra to bring Mr. and Mrs. Deboneri into the office to discuss the new case. Malik couldn’t help but be excited about his first real investigation. Thank goodness Sierra could handle all the tedious paperwork, so he could actually assist his lover in real investigative jobs.
Anthony Deboneri appeared to be in his mid to late fifties, with a white receding hairline, blue eyes and plenty of wrinkles on his forehead. Still, he looked healthy, standing approximately 5’ 9” with a slender physique. He was wearing a black suit with a white shirt and grey tie.
His wife, Lila, looked to be about twenty years his junior. She had blond locks styled in a perfectly coiffed bun and not a trace of age on her face. Sea blue eyes, long lashes, and a shapely body with plenty of curves any straight man would most likely die for.
“Good to meet you both. Why don’t you have a seat there on the sofa and we’ll get right to business.” Malik shook the man’s hand first, then the woman’s. Camdyn did the same before they sat in their chairs with notepads in hand.
“Thank you. Malik, right? You’re the one that answered my inquiry through email. I appreciate your prompt reply.” Anthony Deboneri nodded in his direction.
“Yes, that was me. We try our best to get back to our clients within twenty-four hours.”
“Good. This is a very serious matter that needs your utmost attention. Our daughter has gotten engaged to someone and we have to know if he’s the right fit for her. Her feelings and a lot of money is at stake here. We want to make sure she’s making the right decision.”
“Okay, so what’s his name and where did she meet him,” Camdyn asked.
“Darling, you know more about this man than me.” Anthony deferred to Lila Deboneri, as if he didn’t want to be bothered with the small details.
“Go on Mrs. Deboneri. Mr. Deboneri, can I get you and your wife something to drink? We have coffee, water, juice, and soda if you’re thirsty.” Malik got up from his chair.
“That would be wonderful, thank you. Coffee, please. Considering the circumstances, I wish you had something stronger,” Mr. Deboneri laughed. “And please, call me Anthony.”
“Very well. Mrs. Deboneri, would you like something?”
“Water please, thank you. Is it Perrier or Evian?” She inquired and winked at Malik.
“Uh, it’s actually Evian, ma’am, is that all right?” Malik cocked an eyebrow after Mrs. Deboneri gawked at him before heading for the mini fridge in the corner.
“Evian is fine. Thank you. Now, your name is Camdyn, right?”
“Yes, ma’am. Can you give us some information on the guy your daughter is about to marry?”
“Yes, well, we’ve met him a couple of times, he seems very nice. His name is Marcus Welsh. Laura said she met him at one of the charity functions in town, six weeks ago. According to her, they hit it off immediately and fell in love at first sight.” She took the water from Malik and their hands brushed against each other. “Thank you, Malik. I really do appreciate your hospitality.”
Malik nodded, ignoring her gesture. He handed the coffee to Mr. Deboneri. “Pleasure’s all mine, ma’am. Mr… uh, Anthony, how many creams and sugars for you?”
“Ah, I like it plain, thank you, my good man. Now, as my lovely wife said, the gentleman seems like a nice fellow, but I wonder why, after this short period of time, they want to get married. They clearly don’t know a lot about each other, although, I’m sure he knows about my daughter being the heir to the Deboneri fortune.”
Camdyn was busy writing and Malik started to make notes as well.
“When you met him, did he act strange, tense, or anything to raise red flags?” Malik asked.
Mrs. Deboneri shrugged. “No, not really. He seemed nervous when he first met us and all, but nothing too unusual.”
“We’re just concerned because of the length of time between meeting and getting engaged, gentlemen. We can’t have our daughter rushing into a situation she isn’t fully ready for. We’re not forcing her to marry just anyone. We want her to be happy.”
“Yes, we do. I was in a similar situation myself when I was her age. I want to make sure the person she’s marrying is someone she’s in love with. Do you know what I mean, Malik?” She reached across and patted him on the knee.
Camdyn glared at her.
Malik studied the soft, delicate palm on his knee cap. He cleared his throat and readjusted himself in his seat. “Yes, I do, Mrs. Deboneri.”
“Please, call me Lila. We’re going to be working together, so we really should be on a first name basis, don’t you think?” Lila batted her eyelashes and crossed her legs, just to give both men a view.
“Uh, yeah, sure.” Malik laughed nervously, knowing Camdyn was stewing over this little exchange. What he couldn’t figure out was why Mr. Deboneri was acting as if he didn’t notice.
“Uh, Malik, please excuse my wife. Darling, the young man needs to focus on our case and not on your constant flirtations. I said you could see who you wanted, but please don’t tempt this man. He is working for us.”
That statement stunned Malik and Camdyn, who couldn’t help but look at one another.
“Uh, Mr… Anthony, so, you were saying you wanted to have this man followed?” Malik decided it best to change the conversation back to business as quickly as possible.
“Yes, I want him followed. All his records checked, where he worked and for who. Where he lived, his family if he has one. A full, thorough search on the gentleman. I must know if this man is out for the money or if he really loves my daughter.”
Seemingly ignoring Mr. Deboneri’s chiding of his wife, Camdyn chimed into the conversation. “We will, Mr. Deboneri. You can bet ya bottom dollar we’ll get everything we can on him. Now, I’m curious about what else your daughter has said about him. Has she had suspicions or−”
“No, not at all,” Lila interrupted. “She seems blissfully happy about marrying him, but as I stated, I want to be sure she’s doing it for the right reason and not on an impulse.” She turned her attention from Malik to her husband.
Malik was happy to see she’d focused her attention on Mr. Deboneri and not him. “All right. We’ll do a thorough investigation, run all the usual reports, find out his full background, and report back to you every other day or so. It shouldn’t take us long to track down the information, as long as he isn’t continuously changing his name or address.”
“Good, and I shall make sure the two of you are paid handsomely. I want Laura to be happy, but I care about the type of man she’ll be spending the rest of her life with.”
“As you should,” Malik added. “I assure you, we will do everything we can to find out all the facts.” He stood, hoping the couple would stand as well, so he and Camdyn could get to work. The tension in the room was so thick Malik felt it best they left so he could breathe again.
“Great to hear, Malik and Camdyn.” Anthony got up from the sofa and shook both their hands. “I knew I could count on you. A friend of mine referred your agency and we were worried when we didn’t see Camdyn and Associates anymore, but I see you’ve got yourself a more than capable partner, Mr. Hardy.”
“Yeah.” Camdyn rose up from his chair. “Sure do. In career and life, Mr. Deboneri.” Camdyn patted Malik on the shoulder, apparently making sure Lila saw his display of affection.
“Yes. I’m newly certified and Camdyn has taught me a lot of what he knows. You’ve made the right choice to pick us, Mr. Deboneri.”
“Ah, I’m sure I have.” Anthony seemed relieved when Camdyn mentioned them being partners. He flashed a wry smile and hugged his wife around the waist, who couldn’t stop staring at Malik, despite anything Camdyn said.
“Well, how wonderful is that? Two good looking men in love and working together. That must be a rather interesting situation,” Lila added with a smirk.
Malik bowed his head slightly. “Yes, but we enjoy it. Who better to have on your side than the person you love more than anything?” He slung an arm around Camdyn’s shoulder before waving his other arm towards the door. “We thank you for entrusting this case to us and I assure you, we’ll be in touch.”
“Thank you, gentlemen. I’m glad we’re in good hands.” Anthony and his wife started walking out the door. “And the moment you find something alarming, don’t hesitate to call. My contact number for the cell is always on.”
“Yes, sir.” Malik saluted and walked the couple to the front entrance with Camdyn.
Once they said their goodbyes, Malik gave Camdyn a wink and a sigh. “Uh, that was, erm… interesting.”
“Yeah, that bitch better stop looking at you or else I might have to clock her!” Camdyn grumbled under his breath and pulled Malik by the hand. “You better not be looking all that hard either.”
“Oh c’mon. You know I got no interest in women whatsoever. She’s pretty, but not my type.”
“She was flirting, huh? Cause her husband kept eyeing me from across the room and smiling like a dirty old man. Yuck! I’m not into men old enough to be my grandpa,” Sierra chuckled while straightening out her files.
“Oh he did, huh? So wifey was giving me the eye while Mr. was ogling you? Heh. That’s pretty funny. You sure you don’t wanna a piece of that, Sierra? I mean, he’s got money.”
“Naw, naw, baby. Money cannot buy me any kind of love. I need to be happy with who I’m with. Spiritually, emotionally, and sexually. I can’t be down with no wrinkled old prune.”
Malik could only smile at her description of Mr. Deboneri. No question, he and his wife had some issues, but again, they were the ones asking for the investigation into their daughter’s lover. Best to get the investigation going and solved before Lila’s flirts upset Malik’s man.
