One last excerpt to wrap it all up…
Ewan spent the flight westward alternating between worrying about his grandfather, and recalling everything that happened with Marti over the last four months.
Viktor had been so full of life – and his usual bluster – the last time Ewan saw him six weeks ago, when he went home for the winter holidays.
The old man hadn’t been too happy when word got back to him about Marti breaking up with his grandson. Like the rest of the family, his grandfather had liked her from the start, and he was talking about spoiling any great grandchildren he would have through them by the time they flew home to Nova Scotia.
She had ended it without telling him why barely five short weeks later, after slowly pulling away from him.
Was it only her memories that made her respond that day, or something else? Things were not supposed to go like they did, but it had, and he was grateful she wasn’t upset with him for kissing her. She took it as a need to be comforted, and he let her.
In reality, he wanted – needed – her close, even if it was as a friend. Marti kept his demons at bay, and her presence soothed him during the worst of his struggles while they were a couple.
Being near her that evening had kept him calm, despite the exquisite torture of not being able to kiss her again, or make love to her.
Those kisses they shared that day were a strong reminder of the amount of time that had passed without her by his side, and how their first kiss had come about, almost nine years ago. She had needed his comfort that day, and he had willingly given it to her.
As the plane began its descent into Calgary, he wondered how he could have let his life get so out of hand.

Ewan Campbell once thought he had it all – he was a rising star in the real estate field, popular with his peers, and engaged to his employer’s cousin, the shy and quiet little Marti Marlowe.
A heartbeat later, he was alone – shattered, confused and suicidal. Why had Marti walked away from him?
Years later, in another place, and a new chapter of Ewan’s life, fate brings them face to face again.
They start building a friendship, but Ewan wants more. He wants Marti as his wife, and she seems to prefer their current status as friends.
Can he convince her that taking another chance at their failed future will be the start of the best part of their lives?
