I heard on the radio that the most popular costume for girls is the princess costume. Okay. This kind of surprised me, especially in this time of female empowerment and fictional heroines like Xena, Buffy, Jessica Jones, Super Girl, Wonder Woman, etc. I was pleased to see that a couple of these did make the list.
The top ten list is: Princess, Minnie Mouse, Huntress, Catwoman, Supergirl, Witch, Peacock, Wonder Woman, Moana, Frozen princess.
When I was growing up, I never wanted to be a princess. I never wanted to be saved by a prince. I wanted to be strong enough to save myself. Am I the only one who thinks this way?
I liked dressing up like a vampire, sorceress, wood nymph, cowboy, warrior, or a vampire slayer. Never a princess. That’s why my fictional heroines are strong-willed and don’t rely on men to save them.
I get it. Girls want to be pretty. It’s a girly thing. As a tomboy, maybe I stand alone in wanting to be something more, although tiaras are sparkly and tempting. LOL
You can be pretty and kick some ass like the heroines I listed up above. You can even wear a tiara while you do it. 🙂
