Jenny pulled up behind the pick-up truck tipped half-on-half-off the rural road. When she opened her car door, an elderly man squinted at her over the truck’s hood.
“You need help?” she asked, squeezing between the truck and a fence separating a corn field from the road. With some effort, the man straightened up. Dressed in khakis and a plaid shirt, Jenny figured he was heading into town just like her. “I must’ve hit a nail or something,” he said, giving the tire a kick. “I’m supposed to meet my grandson for lunch, but I guess I’ll miss it. My cell phone won’t work out here.”
Jenny stepped up to the pick-up’s front and studied the tire, and then her cell phone. “Mine either.”
A quick glance about her confirmed no other car or house within sight. She couldn’t abandon the man, but she didn’t want to be late for her own appointment. After chewing her lip for a moment, she asked, “You got a spare?”
The man nodded. “Yeah, but no jack.”
With a determined dip of her chin, she said. “I’ve got that. We’ll have you back on the road in no time.”
The man squinted at her again, this time scrutinizing her from head to toe. She knew he was taking in the dress slacks and blouse she’d worn for the appointment at the bank. “I don’t want you to mess up your clothes. And I’m afraid I won’t be much help. I’ve got a bad back.”
“I’ll be careful.”
