From Virtual Harmony and Other Short, Sweet Romances
Tilting her head to the side, Cynthia accepted the quick peck on her cheek along with a small flower bouquet from Mark, her boss. “We’re going to miss you.”
The others gathered around her cubicle’s entrance nodded.
With some effort, she pushed her lips into a smile, “I’ll miss you too.”
“A permanent position at Harrison Industries. You deserve it,” Marianne, her cubicle-mate, said.
Afraid of what she might say if she opened my mouth, Cynthia froze her smile into place and tipped her head in agreement. When Constance, her temporary agency supervisor, had sent Cynthia to Jonas Shipping’s accounting department, she’d practically promised her a permanent position after the six-month assignment. “They’ve taken on everyone we’ve ever placed there.”
Except for her.
Cynthia thought her work had been satisfactory, and she’d gotten along well with everyone going to lunch with those now telling her how much they’d miss her—including Mark—from the first day. She appreciated the friendly attention they’d all shown from the first day, but especially Mark’s wit and kindness.
She must’ve read their signals wrong, however. She’d only been there three months when the permanent position with Harrison Industries had suddenly appeared. Mark hadn’t even made a counter offer when she told him she planned to leave. And he hadn’t taken any time at all to replace her. Constance told her they were bringing on another temporary accountant tomorrow.
