Excerpt – Baby, That’s the Spirit! (Southern Hearts, Book 2) by Robin Michaela
Hi y’all, thanks for coming to the party!
Here’s an excerpt from my contemporary romance, Baby, That’s the Spirit! The story is about Amethyst (she’s the cousin of Beau from Book 1 – Baby, Count on Me) and Adam, a single dad to Lily, his four year old daughter.
Amethyst is a psychic who sees/speaks with the dead, but Adam thinks the whole idea is ridiculous. In this excerpt, they’re enjoying a picnic on the porch with Lily and Amethyst’s black cat, Boo. Dawson is the ghost of a Civil War soldier. Adam is just finding out that Lily might be clairvoyant, too.
Excerpt:
They’d devoured half the cookies when Lily pointed to the autumn-reddened maple tree nearest the porch. “Can we give the man a cookie, too?”
Adam glanced up. He felt Amethyst tense beside him. Although he couldn’t see anyone, both she and Lily were staring at the same spot in front of the same tree, as if they did see somebody.
Boo suddenly rose from where he’d been lounging on the edge of the afghan. The cat rotated his ears forward, then sat back on his haunches and wrapped his tail around his feet. He also focused on the same place near the maple.
Anxiety shot through Adam. Another quick look confirmed there was no one by the tree or in the front yard. Even so, he stood slowly, then tightened his hands into fists and planted his feet in a defensive stance while he searched the shadows around the tree.
“Hey, mister, you want a cookie?” Lily called, still gazing toward the maple. She held out the remains of her own cookie in invitation to whomever she imagined she saw.
“Lily, who are you talking to?” Adam asked from between clenched teeth.
“Dawson,” Amethyst said, under her breath. ” Lily, do you see him?”
“Who the hell is Dawson?” Adam glared at the maple. Something was going on and he didn’t like it a bit. He would almost think they’d contrived the whole thing as some sort of joke, except for the cat’s reaction and the fact that Lily was too young to grasp the nuances of a deception.
