Chapter 4 Excerpt:
For refusing to release the autopsy details, the public bombarded the Sheriff and Police Departments with phone calls. After weeding out the crackpots and those wanting money for their stories, the authorities found worthwhile leads. Seventy-four-year-old William Samuels, a retired attorney and neighbor to Shaun Weland, reported that, “a few days before their disappearance, Lorena James and Shaun Weland sought my advice on forcing Vernon James to live-up to his promise of signing-over the Buick Skylark to Lorena. I informed them, they had no legal basis. Shaun was very upset about losing the vehicle. Then Lorena told me, Mr. James’s was raping her, and the abuse had continued for several years. I advised the kids to talk to the authorities, and to stay away from Mr. James. To me, Lorena was clearly terrified of her stepfather.
