Excerpt:
I never knew my parents. My mother gave me up at birth. I aged out of foster care at eighteen and suddenly I had to worry about things like food and a roof over my head. The system is supposed to help you transition, but that’s a bunch of crap. I ended up sleeping in a homeless shelter while I looked for a job. One day I came across a recruiting office and stopped to eyeball the posters. The soldiers looked so solid and confident in their uniforms, everything I wasn’t.
I walked inside to hear the spiel. The recruiter told me about Army life, the benefits, and the brotherhood. I was sold on the whole $be all you can be$ propaganda.
I knew it would be physically tough and if they sent me to Afghanistan or Iraq, I could be killed, but that’s part of the job. You roll the dice and you take your chances. Anyway, I wasn’t afraid to die. But I found out there are worse things than dying.
