Excerpt: Chapter 7
On October 21, Det. Thompson claimed Dale walked into the police department wanting to talk. The stepfather was escorted into an interrogation room, where he smoked a hand-rolled cigarette. According to Thompson, he returned minutes later with Lt. Mowery and Agent Henry Ralston.
The main subjects during that interview were Dale’s “persistent denial” of being in Logan Monday evening, who “drove the Buick Skylark,” and what weapons did the family possess?
Once seated, Thompson opened the interrogation with, “Dale, we found a print. We want your boots, shirt, undershirt, hat, and vest.” Dale surrendered his clothing, then said, “A lot of men wear cowboy boots.”
Thompson later said no one mentioned what kind of print was found. At that meeting they again discussed Dale’s claims of being psychic. Dale said after the torsos were found, he “would close his eyes and see visions of people’s faces.” While at the grocery store one day after the discovery, Dale claimed he “saw an individual that looked like one of the faces he saw in his visions.”
Thompson said Dale then described a vision he had of “the kids being inside a small car,” with two people in the back seat that he could not see. Dale described the car’s left headlight as being damaged, and he saw “a bag of clothing, with Todd’s shoes on top in a closet somewhere.”
Thompson admitted they discussed the nude photographs of Annette, Dale initially gave to police. Dale explained the photographs by saying he told Annette at the time when the photos were taken, “When you have children of your own, you can show them these photos and let them know how hard your life was.” That meant the family living in a tent for six weeks when first moving to the county.
