When he turned his cards over, she could barely contain her squeal of glee. Her hand beat his. Grinning, she revealed her hand.
“Looks like I win this time,” she gloated.
“Yes it does,” he retorted. “What would you like to know?
She asked the question she’d wanted an answer to from the moment she met him. “Do you really believe in the paranormal?”
“Yes,” he answered without hesitation.
The certainty in his voice concerned her. He began to shuffle the cards again, leaving her to try to decipher his direct statement. It was offsetting that he bought into the same disillusionment that her friend Babet did. How could a man with his intellect and business savvy believe something so outlandish? Unfortunately, she wouldn’t have a chance to ask him. She lost the next two hands, leaving her clad only in her panties. Mainly because she cheated and took the clip pinning her hair up out.
She felt so exposed that she’d almost wish she’d chosen to answer the questions he asked instead. But he kept asking his original question. She wasn’t ready to tell him why she didn’t trust herself when it came to relationships. There was a possibility he wouldn’t understand. Then again, if he did, that would put another chink in the protective barrier she felt she had to keep up.
Falling for a man like Pierre too fast could prove to be very dangerous. They hadn’t known each other long enough for the connection building between them to be normal. She was positive there were rules about this sort of thing. However, she struggled to remember what they were.
The next hand was dealt and it appeared luck was on her side. She had come up with a winner. Glancing across the table, she saw Pierre waiting.
“Do you believe in shapeshifters?” she inquired.
“I am one,” he responded.
As his answer sunk in, she froze.
“What? That doesn’t make sense…” her voice trailed off. “Wait? Are you joking with me? I thought this was supposed to be serious. If you aren’t going to—”
When he rose to his feet, she stopped speaking. Then his hands went to the buckle of his belt and began to undo it.
“What are you doing?” she questioned.
“The only way I can prove this to you is to show you. But you must promise not to run. If you do, my wolf will give chase,” he stated as he completely undid the buckle and began to tug the hem of his shirt out of his pants.
She was so distracted mentally by his calmness and visually by the fact that he was disrobing, he managed to pull his shirt over his head before bending over to undo the laces on his shoes. Then he started to ease his pants over his hips. That spurred her into action.
“Wait? Why do you have to take off your clothes?” she asked.
One corner of his mouth curved upward. “Because I’ll destroy them during my change if I don’t.”
Her mouth dropped open. He believed that he was a shapeshifter. How could a man who’d appeared to be so normal up until now become so unhinged? More importantly why was she still sitting there as if this situation was an everyday occurrence. Not knowing how much time she had before he did whatever it was he thought he could do, she was certain she needed to leave.
“Serafine?”
The tone in his voice made her look up instead of getting up like everything in her screamed for her to.
“Yes,” she whispered.
“Whatever you do, please don’t run,” he requested.
Before she could respond something happened in front of her that she couldn’t put into words. Pierre’s body began to contort and before she drew her next breath a wolf stood on all fours before her.
A scream instinctively built up and escaped. In the next instant, she was grateful she’d remained seated because that meant she was closer to the ground as she fell over into a dead faint.
